Do you really need a "laptop" or would a "netbook" serve your needs?  I ask this because I have seen netbooks recently for quite a lot less than a full laptop. I purchased a Compaque Laptop (15.4" screen) 2.5 years ago when I panicked and thought ones with XP were not going to be available any more.  The reason I got it was for Internet access and email while traveling.  This decision was a serious mistake because the battery that came in it was/is so poor that the screen dims noticeably when it is not running on AC power; the battery holds a charge for only a short time (even when not using it), and it is basically a piece of junk (altho I will say it works as well with Linux as it does with Windows).  I would *never* buy another laptop sight unseen; check whatever you are considering in an actual store if possible!  Just how a 10" screen (large for netbooks) would be, I don't know, and I also wonder about the usability of the smaller keyboard, altho people seem to like them fine for the purposes I mentioned above.  So I think a lot depends on whether you intend to do any real computing, or just the Internet and email thing.

Karl
