I ran into something that I had not seen before yesterday; I clicked on a link found in a list of stuff by Google, and as soon as I reached the site and clicked on a link there, a box popped up informing me that I had just gotten a virus at the website I was on and to run the scanner (part of the box) to get rid of it. Since I was running Linux and no AV software, it seemed rather unlikely that I had a virus! So I clicked on the cancel button (rather than OK on the box). Immediately another box saying the same thing popped up on top of the first one. When I clicked "cancel" again, a 3rd box popped up telling me to download the xyz.exe to get rid of the virus. I then tried clicking on the "x" in the upper right corner of the box and it went away, so I proceeded to do the same thing to the other two layered boxes and got rid of the stupid thing. *No* Windows .exe file will ever show up in Linux as anything more than a non working deal anyway.
The point is, if you have never seen how your AV program works when it finds a virus, run the eicar virus test file and make sure you *know* what will happen when your AV program actually finds a virus! It will certainly not tell you to download a new .exe file to remove the virus.
