I use MWSnap 3 when in Windows for screen capture. (The Linux equivalent is KSnapshot.) The icon looks like a camera. Double click it, and it will open into a window with options down the left side and a tool bar across the top. Choose "snap any region" by clicking on that button. Then click the snap button and drag your mouse from upper left corner to lower right corner of desired area; the captured area will appear in the box as you drag it. When you have what you want, click the mouse again and the original screen appears with the picture in it. You can then save it in bmp, jpg, png, gif, or tif formats. It is *very* easy to use! You can modify it as desired in Irfanview or whatever. The screen looks dark in the picture below because it was active at the time I took its picture.
