Jan1 -- To answer your question, my CD/DVD drive on my desktop computer allowed playing DVD's (movies, etc.) and recording DVD's (with data from my computer). I also used to be able to Copy a movie-type DVD using Roxio to burn the new DVD.
New Developments: I tried writing a blank DVD with data -- and that worked just fine. Then I took out that DVD and reinserted it into the drive; there was no problem recognizing it and the data was accessible.
Then I put a different movie-type DVD into the drive and voila! it worked. I have about seven DVDs which are in a series that I bought. Three of the seven cause my computer to freeze if I click on "My Computer." And on those, the automatic option menu (which program to use to play the DVD) does NOT appear.
So one would conclude that there is something wrong with those three DVDs. But they play just fine in my other computer and also in my DVD player. What could the problem be?
I did an "explore" on one of the 'bad' DVDs using my other computer. These files (link below) were shown in a folder called Video_TS. Nothing else is on the DVD.
