Posted Message:

I've been here and there with no luck for my problem. Basically, it's mostly a
browser hijacker, which I enter the sites in the Security's restricted sites list.
I almost associate the non-support of Service Pack 2 with corrupting the Service
Pack 3, somehow.

Also, I'd like to be the only user and would like to get rid of that Administrator.
Thanks.

I wonder if I can export any certain portion of my tower's Registry to copy and
Import to the laptop's Registry that might fix the Update problem.

Checking the update site renders a problem: Error found: Code 0x80072efe

Below are things I've found and thought I'd share if you're into lengthy reading.

To install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent, we recommend that you
visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.update.microsoft.com (http://www.update.microsoft.com)

How to determine whether you are running a 32-bit or a 64-bit edition of Windows:

You must know which kind of processor platform (x86-based, x64-based, or Itanium-
based) that you have. Most users have x86-based processors.

If you are not sure which kind of processor platform you have, install the
x86-based update on the computer.

To learn which version of Windows that you are running, or to learn whether it is a
32-bit version or 64-bit version, open System Information (Msinfo32.exe).

Then, review the value that is listed for System Type. To do this, follow these
steps:

Click Start, and then click Run, or click Start Search.

Type msinfo32.exe, and then press ENTER.

In System Information, review the value for System Type.

For 32-bit editions of Windows, the System Type value is x86-based PC.

For 64-bit editions of Windows, the System Type value is x64-based PC.

64-bit edition of Windows, click the following article number to view the article

Possible:
This issue occurs because the Wups2.dll file that is included in the latest version
of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are
missing after the repair install of Windows XP.
The release version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed
back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you did not restart the computer before you
install Windows XP SP3.

The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed to pointing to the
Wups.dll file that is included in the release version of Windows XP SP2.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Error Messages

The error code 0x80070424 you described also means "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST".

Windows Update depends on these two following services:

1) Windows Update

2) Background Intelligent Transfer (BIT)

If it happens that these services are disable or missing, you will encounter this
error code. Hence, you will need to ensure that the necessary services are
available and running. Here's how:

1.       Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then
click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator
password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2.       Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

4.       Double-click Windows Update.

5.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

6.       Double-click Workstation.

7.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8.       Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of
Services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site
and download the update:

Vista

What is simple and what is difficult depends of point of view. I'll try to give you
the best simple instruction (I hope):

1.       Download packed TrustedInstaller.exe appriopriate for your system
architecture 32bit or 64bit and place on your desktop.

for 32bit system

for 64bit system

2.       Download packed TrustedInstaller.reg from here
< http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/16947d1257340458-windows-update-error-80070424-trustedinstallerfix.zip >

and place on your desktop.

3.       Unpack both files.

4.       Takeownership C:\Windows\Servicing folder and add your account to have
full control
//see this tutorial how to do that:

5.       Copy TrustedInstaller.exe from your desktop and paste to
C:\Windows\Servicing folder

6.       Double click on TrustedInstaller.reg on your desktop->if it will return
message "succesfully imported keys to registry", ignore points 7,8,9 and go at once
to point 10,if it will return error "access denied" go to point 7

7.       Download PsTools

and extract from this pack psexec.exe file and paste to C:\Windows\System32

8.       Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as
admin)

and type in console

psexec -s -i -d regedit

(this command run regedit from "NT Authority\System" account)

9.       In regedit,go to File>>Import navigate to your desktop, choose
TrustedInstaller.reg and apply.

10.       Restart computer.

After restart Windows Update should work fine now.

11.       If everything work fine now you should restore original permissions to
C:\Windows\Servicing folder

-remove your account from permissions to Servicing folder

-Restore ownership of Servicing folder back to "NT Service\TrustedInstaller"
//see this tutorial how to do that

12.       Remove downloaded files from your desktop (TrustedInstaller.reg,
TrustedInstaller.exe, packed files) they won't be longer needed
