I got up from my seat, and like a cheerleader, hands in the air and yelled: I got it, I got it, I got it!
I'd previously thought update failure was due to corrupt Java or ActiveX.
I'd read that malware can change the DNS for internet connection. I used a method I read in a book, Microsoft WindowsXP Inside Out, page 934:
Use the automated repair option, one method:
At the command prompt, enter CD\
Type in at the C:\
Ipconfig /renew
Restore the base TCP/IP files, to reinstall all its components and reset registry keys to a clean state. Enter at the C:\
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
It will not tamper with your current network settings.
I clicked the browser Tools, Windows Update and it loaded results below!
Now if you can help me get my laptop speed back; the malware file is Alureon.H, and slowed me tremendously. The MS malicious software removal tool found this. Supposedly, I'm to remove it manually, but don't know how.
I've not really had a chance to see if I'm still so slow, but so far so good.
