1) I guess it's like anything else that you do, the more that you do it, the more that you understand it and all that's part of it, etc.

2) No, I do not do them. I tried some many (and I mean many) years ago and promptly gave up.

My comment of "if they exist" was not directed at 'the puzzle creator', but instead to the "common habits, tricks, etc.", I just placed the parentheses in the wrong place, sorry about that if it confused you or anybody else.

3) Yes, I do know that. I remember seeing a TV segment some time ago on people that create them for a living. One in particular was the N.Y. Times puzzle creator and how he would receive sample puzzles wanting him to publish them.

4) Good for you, and it looks like I / we learned a new word today :-)
